Subway fans have a rare opportunity to own their own subway car and no, it’s not April Fools Day. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) for $10,000 and under certain stipulations, you can. The 1972 first generation cars on the system are expected to be the hot items on a subway fan’s list.
The agency last year issued a statement that the people could find creative and innovative ways to extend the life of 650 decommissioned cars.
Some of the terms are quite clear – the agency removes all BART signage and markings, not in operational ability, the car(s) must be in a secure location and they can’t be ‘reefed’ in the ocean as New York City did with its ‘Redbird’ fleet.
What you would be getting is a ‘stock’ car that would be stuffed and mounted that makes BART look good. A good example of this is an New York City Transit's IRT R-36 Redbird outside Queens Borough Hall in New York City and was used as a tourism information ‘booth’ for Queens.
The cost is expected to begin at $8,000 and $10,000 plus transportation costs per BART car.
For those that can’t afford a car of their own, there are plans for items like subway operator’s handle could be made available.
